Proposition 65 Statement

State of California Proposition 65 Statement

Proposition 65 became law in November 1986.  The official name of

Proposition 65 is the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986.

Proposition 65 requires businesses to provide warnings to Californians about significant exposures to chemicals that cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm.

Proposition 65 also prohibits California businesses from knowingly discharging significant amounts of listed chemicals into sources of drinking water.

Proposition 65 requires California to publish a list of Chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm.  This list, which must be updated at least once a year, has grown to include approximately 900 chemicals since it was first published in 1987.  This list includes pesticides, heavy metals, and Vitamin A at certain levels.

Certain listed chemicals, such as lead, are widely distributed through the environment in air, soil, water, and rocks.  As a result, these types of chemicals are often found in commonly eaten foods and throughout the food supply even though these chemicals are not intentionally added to foods or nutritional supplements.

Edible Oil Products blended and packaged at The Olive Oil Source do not require a Proposition 65 warning statement as they do not include any of the chemicals required to be labeled with a warning under Proposition 65.*

Balsamic Vinegars blended and packaged at The Olive Oil Source do contain measurable amounts of lead, a chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer or reproductive harm.  The measurable amounts of lead vary from batch to batch and may be in excess of the California’s State Maximum Level**.  The Olive Oil Source does not test for lead, monitor the levels of lead, nor do we warrant that the Balsamic Vinegars blended and packaged at The Olive Oil Source contain or do not contain a determined level of lead.

*With the exception of Bacon Natural Flavor Infused Olive Oil, Bacon Natural Flavor Infused Organic Olive Oil, The Mediterranean Line Bacon Olive Oil, Lemon Natural Flavor Infused Olive Oil, Lemon Natural Flavor Infused Organic Olive Oil and The Mediterranean Line Lemon Olive Oil.  These are blended with natural flavoring that can contain chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer or reproductive harm.

**Vinegars are not regularly tested by any agency.  In 2002, a California lawsuit concerning lead-tainted vinegar led to state mandates that established the California’s Sate Maximum Level of (34 μg/L) based on consumption rates ≥0.5 μg Pb per day, which translates to 34 parts per billion.
